4 Strategies to Overcome Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

Updated: Feb 8, 2021

When your friends are traveling around the world, getting promotions at work, buying houses, getting married, building families and it seems like you haven’t done shit with your life, think about this:

  1. You do You — Everyone comes from a different background with their own bank of experiences. Some people are born rich and have the luxury of living a spoiled life, others are born on the streets and go through some of the harshest life challenges before hitting puberty. Those things are out of anyone’s control. What we can control and be responsible for is how to live our own lives. In other words, you’re in charge of who you are and who you become. Once you adopt this attitude, nothing in life will slow you down while striving to be the best you you can be.

  2. Be Happy for Others — Just because you’re not the one getting a promotion or engaged to the love of their life does not mean you can’t be happy for others. Your time will come, if that is what you want. Living a life of jealousy will only hinder you from achieving your own dreams and goals. When you are able to be happy for others, you allow yourself to accept who you are in your current situation, and ultimately become happy for yourself too.

  3. Be Grateful for What You Do Have Just — like you are scrolling through your best friends Instagram wishing you were getting married to your high school sweetheart too, someone else is looking at your Facebook wishing they had your job. You may not have it all, but you definitely have something going for you that you can be proud of. And if you don’t, then that’s okay but it is time to takes steps to move forward. Reach out for help. Be humble but determined. Again, life is full of opportunities that come and go. Pick one and make the best of it.

  4. Treat Yo Self — You might be missing out on a girls trip because you have bills to pay, but don’t sell yourself short because you made a grown up decision to be responsible. Instead, take yourself out for an ice cream treat or spa day because you deserve it.

It is easy to want what we don’t have, especially if it seems like everyone else has it. Understand that you are not alone in feeling that way but your perspective and mindset is what will help determine whether you keep feeling it or move on. Keep in mind we all have our own paths to success and success means different things for everyone. Just keep swimming.
